A Tencel summer quilt is a lightweight quilt made with Tencel fabric and filled primarily with polyester fibers, Tencel, and other materials.
What is Tencel?
“Tencel” is the domestic name; its technical name is “lyocell fiber.” Lyocell is a cutting-edge fiber produced by dissolving wood pulp—primarily derived from softwood—along with water and an amine oxide solvent, heating the mixture until fully dissolved, and then spinning it into fibers. It combines cotton’s softness, polyester’s strength, the luxurious feel of wool, and the silky drape of real silk. When worn next to the skin, it feels exceptionally smooth and cool, while also offering excellent moisture‑wicking and humidity‑balancing properties, helping to reduce the proliferation of dust mites.
Advantages of Tencel
1. Moisture absorption and moisture wicking
Polyester fibers cannot fully absorb moisture, whereas Tencel fibers can absorb and release it thoroughly, with an absorption capacity 1.5 times that of cotton. This is primarily due to the use of a groundbreaking, controllable nanofibrillation technology in its production, which allows human sweat to be drawn into and expelled through countless microscopic channels. Additionally, Tencel boasts exceptional moisture-wicking properties, helping to keep your sleeping environment fresh and ensuring your skin stays optimally hydrated—even in air-conditioned rooms.
2. Bacteriostatic property
Because Tencel efficiently absorbs human sweat and releases it back into the atmosphere, it maintains a dry environment that slows bacterial growth and effectively inhibits issues such as dust mites, mold, and unpleasant odors. Experiments have shown that bacteria grow approximately 2,000 times faster on other synthetic fibers than on Tencel.
3. Environmental friendliness
Tencel is derived from wood pulp and is 100% naturally biodegradable. Its circular process follows this cycle: wood pulp → Tencel → degradation → fertilizer. Its unique eco-friendly fiber‑production process enables 99% of the spinning solution to be recycled and reused.
4. Comfort
The smooth, plump surface and exceptional absorbency of Tencel fibers make Tencel products particularly well-suited for sensitive skin. Many people complain that rough fabrics feel uncomfortable against the skin, but Tencel is the ideal choice. Dermatological studies show that wearing Tencel garments close to the body can significantly enhance comfort and boost feelings of well-being.
5. Insulation
Static electricity can be harmful to the human body. Prolonged exposure to a static‑electric environment can adversely affect skin health and sleep quality. Static buildup is often caused by dry conditions, but Tencel naturally contains up to 13% moisture, and its exceptional moisture‑wicking properties prevent the accumulation of static charge, helping you enjoy better sleep.
6. Toughness
A comparison of dry and wet tear strengths reveals that, whether in room‑temperature conditions or after washing, Tencel consistently exhibits greater strength than other fabrics. This makes Tencel bedding easier to care for, eliminating the need for complicated washing and maintenance routines.
