A genuine silk quilt features an inspection opening; once opened, the silk filling is clearly visible. Authentic silk quilts are not quilted—only the four corners and the surface are lightly stitched with needles to prevent the silk from shifting. 　　High-quality silk boasts a soft, pearly sheen—neither darkening nor feeling rough. Its luster is bright and even, diffusing light without any fluorescent reflection. Compared to tussah silk, mulberry silk is whiter, has longer fibers, and offers an even softer, more delicate, and smoother hand, along with superior elasticity.

　　Pull out a few strands at random and hold them to a flame: silk has a very low ignition point, does not sustain combustion, and extinguishes quickly once ignited. The smoke produced is white, accompanied by the characteristic burnt‑protein odor of hair or feathers—similar to the acrid smell of animal protein when burned. The resulting ash can be easily rubbed between your fingers into a fine black powder. In contrast, synthetic fibers will continue to burn, emitting black smoke with a pungent, irritating odor; the ash is dark, clings to your hands, and forms hard little pellets. The two materials exhibit clear differences.
